Hardwood Flooring And Laminate Flooring Can Be An Easy Home Improvement

Hardwood flooring and laminate flooring are the top choices for floor improvement today. Carpeting, which at one time was high on the list, has now dropped considerably. Either hardwood or laminate is a preferable choice. Sometimes it is difficult to decide which material is best for a particular job. There are some positive and negative considerations for each one.

Making a decision may be helped by knowing some information about both materials. Hardwood can be engineered wood or solid wood. The major difference between the two is that engineered wood is a fusion of a hardwood top layer with a softer wood second layer. Tongue and groove installation is available with both types, but hardwood requires nails or glue. Both forms of hardwood have a variety of colors and woods to choose from. Laminate, even though it looks like wood, is not wood but a high density fiberboard with pictures of wood laminated on the top layer. Laminate is made to resemble wood, tile, or stone.

Hardwood is the only choice for some people. They want only natural materials to be used for any floor improvement. They believe that there is no manufactured material that can compete with natural wood. There are some positive aspects to choosing hardwood. Hardwood is very long lasting. Some older houses still have their original hardwood floors with little to no change in the beauty of the wood even after many years. Hardwood has a nice warmth that can be felt when someone walks across it. There is a richness and luxuriousness that cannot be imitated by manufactured materials. Various woods and colors are available when using hardwood including: oak, maple, cherry, pine, and some lesser known varieties of wood. The biggest positive for installing hardwood is the significant appreciation of the value of a home. Most new home buyers today insist on having at least some hardwood floors in the home. They are aware of its lasting quality and its prospective monetary value.

Hardwood flooring has many positive aspects for choosing it, but there are some negative aspects to consider. It is usually more expensive than other floor types. It can fade when exposed to direct sunlight for an extended period of time. It does not always work well when exposed to moisture. Good cleaning is a must because dirt and grime can cause scratching. Staining is sometimes an issue, usually requiring professional workers to clean if stained badly. High heels and pet claws can cause scruff marks rather easily. If a person plans ahead and gives the hardwood a little care, these problems can be slowed or possibly eliminated altogether.

A growing trend today for floor improvement is laminate. There are many positive reasons for choosing laminate. Foremost is that it is less expensive. The look of wood can be had for a significant savings. It can be almost impossible with some higher grade laminate to visually see much of a difference between it and hardwood. Installation is fairly easy and can be done by many home owners saving even more money. Resistance to scratching and stains and easy maintenance are also positives of this material. For anyone with limited funds, it is an excellent room upgrade material.

There are some cons to laminate. It is not as durable as hardwood. Although many companies give several years on their guarantee for it, it is really too soon to know how long it will actually last. Once it has been on the market longer, this factor can be determined better. It sometimes does not do as well as other flooring materials in a very high traffic area. It cannot be shined like a hardwood because of the finish already on it when purchased. It has more of a matte finish, and even this finish can become dull and lose some of its luster after several years. Although most manufacturers claim that it can be repaired if damaged, damage usually requires that the individual damaged board be completely replaced. Even though it does have some cons, if taken care of properly, it can be a very viable option for homeowners.

Hardwood or laminate are better choices than traditional carpet. They are both hyper allergenic, and do not grow the mold or collect the dust that a carpet does. They can be truly cleaned, whereas, with carpet, the dirt is never totally gone. This is important today when so many people suffer from allergies.

Using hardwood flooring and laminate flooring may be a good choice for you. You must consider what your own needs are and which choices fit best with those needs. Either of these materials can be an excellent floor improvement.

The thing with hardwood flooring is that it takes a a lot more to take care of than laminate flooring. Although, you can use chemicals to wax laminated floors better then wood floors. Wood needs a certain type of waxes that shines the floor without damaging the floor.
