Status Of The POS Industry In Canada

POS (point of sale) processing has become a valuable tool for retailers. It has achieved a high degree of saturation in most developed countries. The status of this industry in Canada is fairly typical. Following is an introduction to point of sale processing and its support industry, and where it stands in Canada.

Transaction processing can be made more efficient by doing as much of it as possible close to where the transaction (sale) occurs, close in both time and space. Thus the term point of sale, doing the processing at the point of sale reduces both cost and error rates.

Thus, when a customer goes through the checkout line at a grocery store, lots of things happen. The prices of the items purchased are calculated. Store inventory is updated to reflect the purchases. The total charge is calculated, the customer’s method of payment is validated, and the payment transaction itself is initiated.

Larger organizations pioneered the development of point of sale. As the terminals, networks, and other facilities became less expensive, it began to appear in smaller establishments. Now it is very common in all kinds of businesses.

Larger retailers may do much of their system development and operations internally, though even they must connect to some sort of financial institution to authorize and settle payments. The smaller retailers are very reliant on point of sale service companies.

These companies typically provide the retailer with point of sale equipment that is ready to use. They install and configure the equipment and build whatever supporting networks may be required. They will train the retailer’s staff in the use of the system. They operate the servers and other central site equipment needed to support the retailer’s point of sale equipment. They help diagnose and solve any problems that may arise.

Point of sale service companies normally provide their customers with turnkey systems. These systems do not require development or configuration. The user plugs them in and uses them, like a DVD player or a lawn mower.

The Canadian point of sale industry mainly comprises point of sale service companies. There are both regional and national companies that provide turnkey systems. They do some software development, but I’m not aware of any significant hardware development that they are doing.

Retailers in Canada benefit greatly from point of sale processing. Their usage is similar to that in other developed parts of the world. Canada’s point of sale service companies, the major portion of the POS Industry in Canada, has a lot of responsibility for this success.
